UFC 99: Ben & Jerry’s the key for svelte Paul Kelly
He's the kind of guy you'd expect to run into in a pub. Of course, it may be Paul Kelly's fists that you'd run into. "Tellys" is your classic brawler. The old Kelly was a hefty test walking around at near 200 pounds when he was fighting at middleweight. The Liverpudlian has conditioned himself well enough over the last year or so to move down to 155 pounds. How has he done it? Cutting out the Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Kelly has to stay disciplined for a little while longer and then it's right back to his favorite ice cream. Kelly says he'll be downing some of the famous stuff for breakfast on fight day (4:20 mark):
"Me first meal is a glycemic meal, be it children's cereal or in my case, Ben & Jerry's ice cream," Kelly said he couldn't name a favorite flavor. He can't choose. But he did recommend waffles with the cookie dough and hot chocolate sauce, plus whip cream.
Kelly has the potential to be a beast at 155 but he'd better shore up his submission defense. He's facing Roli Delgado (6-3-1, 0-1 UFC) at UFC 99, who appeared on The Ultimate Fighter 8. Kelly was a mess on the ground in his only UFC loss against Marcus Davis. Davis is far from the jiu-jitsu black belt that Delgado is. Delgado also poses problems as an extremely tall lightweight at 6-foot-2.
