UFC 89: The Chris Leben Story
onday’s UFC 89 Countdown: Bisping vs. Leben special detailed the upbringing of TUF’s original hard-drinking hothead, Chris Leben. It seems that everybody in Chris’s family was a drinker, from the father who abandoned him to the mother who tried to support him and his two siblings with her bartending job — and the lack of supervision, stability, and positive role models through his childhood didn’t exactly shape him into the world’s most balanced person.
Other things we learn about Chris Leben in this video: He couldn’t read or write when he graduated high school. He went AWOL from the Army after being convinced by a recruiter — falsely, it turned out — that he could enlist just to be on their wrestling team. Losing to Anderson Silva sent him on a two-week bender. Excluding boot camp and jail, he’d never been sober for more than a week or two straight since he was 13, but at the time of Leben’s interview for the special, he was 89 days sober.
Bas Rutten on Kimbo Slice
October 17, 2008 by admin
Bas Rutten has been at Kimbo Slice’s side throughout his odd journey in mixed martial arts. He vented to Yahoo! Sports this week about how Kimbo has been treated poorly by much of the media in the aftermath of knockout loss at the hands of Seth Petruzelli:
“Kimbo didn’t deserve any of this. Kimbo didn’t put himself in the main event. I always said let him get some fights. Let him get comfortable before he fights big shows.”
Rutten spoke passionately about laying off Kimbo:
“Did he behave himself bad in public? No. Did he not train hard? No, he did not. He respected everybody. (He’s saying) I’m a little squirrel in this big world trying to learn this game.”
Rutten said the whole day for Kimbo and his camp was confusing. Kimbo got caught off guard after training for groundwork against Ken Shamrock. Rutten said he actually would’ve felt better had Petruzelli tried to take the fight to the ground. He also admitted that normally the Petruzelli knockout punch shouldn’t takeout any fighter but Slice just got caught the wrong way.
Rutten had some good insight when asked to react to claims that Shamrock bowed out of the fight on purpose:
“Ken had some things going on. I don’t know if I can go into that. But his head wasn’t in the right place. He was kind of angry and trying to blow off some steam. He started working out and rolling around. Obviously, they rolled harder than they were supposed to go and boom there the cut was.”

“Everything has its time,” Anderson Silva told Sherdog.com, “and I believe my time is already over.”
“I’m going to be fat, with a big belly by the side of the Octagon, eating popcorn behind the scenes, making my imitations and screaming for the fighters: “Go there! Kick his face! Put him down!”

Dana White Pissed at EliteXC
October 12, 2008 by admin
Dana White is downright pissed off. He’s so mad at EliteXC in this video, one camera angle is insufficient for capturing his rage. He lays into EliteXC for the Seth Petruzelli “knockout bonus” scandal and suggests that Jeremy Lappen and the Shaws should look into the kickboxing business if they want to keep fights off the ground so badly.
Kim Couture Interview ‘Jared Shaw is a Pervert’
October 11, 2008 by admin
Couture said EliteXC turned the Carano weigh-in into a debacle:
“It was an awkward situation. Thank god her Dad was there. She would’ve much rather had me holding that towel for her than Jared Shaw in the background trying to peek over the towel. I thought that was pretty low.”
As if the week hasn’t been rough enough for the younger Shaw, now Couture is claiming that the EliteXC VP is a pervert:
“He’s got a little bit of an obsession with Gina Carano as most guys do. He was trying to sneak a peek, it was ridiculous.”
