BJ Penn vs Kenny Florian title fight at UFC 101

March 29, 2009 by admin

3393033286_775c25952b_mediumThe anticipated showdown between UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn and number one contender Kenny Florian will finally take place. A blog post on Penn’s official website stated that Florian has already signed his bout agreement and “as for B.J., we received the bout agreement (Friday) afternoon and plan on making this fight happen.”

The post states the bout will headline UFC 101 on Aug. 8 in Philadelphia.

The bout will be Penn’s first defense of his lightweight title since defeating Sean Sherk at UFC 84 in May of last year. It will also mark his first action in the Octagon since a loss to UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94 in January, which has been mired in controversy over accusations of improper usage of Vaseline by St. Pierre’s camp.

It’s good to see that the talent-rich UFC lightweight division won’t be in a holding pattern any longer, and Penn will be back fighting at a more suitable weight for his frame. Certainly, Florian has improved immensely over the years; his is a great story, especially from the UFC perspective. This should be an easy fight to sell given its implications for the division and the skill with which these two combatants communicate their respective messages to fans.

Penn: I was going to make GSP my last fight

February 4, 2009 by admin

In this post fight interview, BJ says GSP was going to be his last fight. He has been with the UFC for 10 years and he wanted to go out right after the GSP fight and retire. But with the loss, he doesn’t know whats gonna happen. He stated he is going to follow his heart and decide soon to keep fighting or to retire for sure. It seemed like he was just upset and didn’t know what his immediate plans were. He seemed very rattled. From the overall vibe of the interview it seems like he doesn’t wanna go out with a bad loss like that.

JD briefly talked about the Vaseline incident and discussed how they didn’t wanna complain and make excuses but for the sake of the fairness and future opponents they wanted to make sure the issue was resolved fairly.

This could be a blessing in disguise that he loss. He said strongly in the interview that this was going to be his last fight 100% especially because he expected to WIN. He wanted to go out on top and leave his mark forever on the sport.

Penn losing ensures that more than likely well end up seeing a couple more fights from the prodigy.
