Staten Island Looks at MMA for New York

The fight for MMA in New York lingers on, with various corners of the debate weighing in. Today’s forum for the debate is local print media The Staten Island Advance, who take a look at both sides of the argument. While Bob Reilly is the most vocal critic of MMA in the state, there are others that share the sentiment that the state would be better off with out mixed martial arts. One such person is state representative Andrew Lanza, who sounds out his case:

“I just think it sends the wrong message,” says state Sen. Andrew Lanza (R-Staten Island).

“No doubt about the revenues,” Lanza says. “We’ve done a terrible job in this state encouraging business, and we need to look for more ways to diversify revenue in the state. But [Ultimate Fighting] … for me it’s a step too far of what we should condone as a community.”

Local New Jersey promoter counters those arguments in this video accompaniment to the article.

While we in the MMA community are all for the passage of MMA legislation for the state, the piece does a good job of offering up both sides of the argument and makes for a good read.
