Sonnen shows Miller what a world class wrestler can do
The Miller brothers made a nice transition over to the UFC from the IFL. But you had to look at the competition as Jim and Dan rolled out to a 5-0 start in the big leagues. Matt Horwich, Rob Kimmons, Jake Rosholt, Matt Wiman and David Baron aren't anywhere near top 10 fighters in their respective weight classes. The smaller brother Jim, stepped up in class against Gray Maynard and was beaten badly at UFC 96. Dan Miller met the same fate tonight against Chael Sonnen, who is an Olympic level wrestler with 33 MMA fights under his belt.
Sonnen's one weakness is his submission defense. He was shaky in the opening seconds when he got caught in a guillotine choke with 4:40 left in the round. Sonnen was turning red but he got himself out of the choke about 25 second later. After that, Sonnen (23-10-1, 2-3 UFC) took Miller (11-2, 3-1 UFC) down at will and had top control for 12 of the next 14 minutes rolling to a unanimous decision (30-27 on all cards) victory.
This was an impressive win for Sonnen who took this fight on just three weeks notice. The Team Quest member stepped up for Ed Herman, who didn't want to take the fight against Miller after Yushin Okami got injured. Sonnen said he weighed 221 pounds on May 1st when he accepted the offer. There were zero gas tank issues as he made his way down to 185 pounds.
PROFESSOR X IS A MASSACRE VICTIM
Two fights in the UFC and two bad losses for Xavier Foupa-Pokam. Drew "Massacre" McFedries, one of the hardest hitting guys in the UFC, caught "Professor X" with a left that pushed him back to the cage and then dropped him with a right 20 seconds into the fight.
McFedries jumped on top and pounded away. Foupa-Pokam made it to his feet but then got caught by a fight ending uppercut at 0:37 of the first.
