Scott Smith’s mom told him no trash talking with Nick Diaz

He's one of the nicest guys in mixed martial arts, so much so that he still sort of hides his tattoo from his mother. Scott Smith is the anti-Nick Diaz, making his June 6 fight against MMA's weed smoking, bad boy all the more interesting. Smith appeared on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas and was asked if he was going to launch into a pre-fight ripfest on Diaz's marijuana habits:

"I'm going to stay away from all that," laughed Smith. "My Mom would be disappointed if I got caught up in all of that. I got a tattoo and my Mom was in tears that I'm not the goody, goody boy that she raised me to be."

Smith recognizes that it'll be tough to stay out of the pre-fight trash talk scrum with Diaz, who seems to thrive on hating his opponent:

"I've kind of gone back and forth," Smith said about whether to respond to Diaz's upcoming smack talk. "I know for sure I'm staying off all the forums. I figured my kids will be brought into it. I knew that would bother me. He made a comment that I always bring my kids to the fight and they're going to make him out to be the villian because he's going to beat me up in front of my kids."

Smith said the comment was odd because the Benji Radach fight at Strikeforce 14 was the only time he's brought his kids to see him fight.

Listen to Scott Smith talk Nick Diaz, his win over Radach and respond to criticism from Seth Petruzelli:

Smith did give Diaz props for his boxing and aggressive style. On the flip side, he defended Anderson Silva's laid back style at UFC 97. Cagewriter also touched on the fact that Smith angered Petruzelli when he said that he wouldn't sign "The Silverback" if he owned Strikeforce. That was based on the fact that Petruzelli helped quicken the demise of EliteXC by publicly claiming that they paid him to fight a certain way against Kimbo Slice. Smith wrapped it up by saying he wasn't afraid to run into Petruzelli in the future because he probably wouldn't recognize him anyway.
