Quarry mines Mac’s world and pounds out a win
Jason MacDonald said he'd learned his lesson after a bad loss to Wilson Gouveia: No more standing with good strikers! He got what he wanted early against Nate Quarry, a clinch in the opening 10 seconds. But Quarry pulled a fast one on him, scoring a takedown and gaining top control.
"The Rock" was awesome working from full guard and smashed Quarry repeatedly with elbows. MacDonald had no answer and was eventually busted open from a particularly wicked shot. "The Athlete" could do nothing to improve his position and never even threatened with a submission from the bottom because Quarry was constantly moving. He took 16 unanswered elbows and punches when referee Mario Yamasaki had to stop it at the 2:27 mark.
Quarry (11-3, 6-2 UFC) has looked horrible in recent fights on the ground but he turned things around here. His fast pace erased any shot that MacDonald could take advantage of a hole in his ground game. MacDonald's future with the UFC could be in jeopardy. This is the second straight loss for MacDonald (21-12, 5-5 UFC).
In the last fight on the non-televised portion of the card, Xavier Foupa-Pokam (20-10, 0-1 UFC) was fighting way out of class against Denis Kang. He got completely dominated on the ground and was out of gas by the middle of the second round. He twice puts his hands on his knees with Kang standing right in front of him. There appeared to be a chance his corner was going to throw in the towel before the third round. The fight went the distance with Kang rolling to a 30-27 unanimous decision victory on all three cards. Kang a veteran of PRIDE Fighting picked up his first win in the UFC and the 32nd of his career.
