Monson takes an odd decision from Nelson

Roy Nelson was befuddled by the decision but ultimately his lack of killer instinct on the ground opened the door for the judges to screw him giving a unanimous decision (29-28 on all three cards) win to Jeff Monson in the final MMA fight of the evening at "March Badness" in Pensacola, Florida.

Nelson and Monson engaged in the clinch-fest in the first two rounds. When the fight did go to the ground, Nelson controlled the action. He actually mounted Monson in each round but the "Snowman" escaped relatively easily. Nelson should’ve also been given credit for thwarting several Monson takedown attempts. Nelson did land some knees in the second as the fighters clinched on the ropes. The knees had to be the difference maker on the judges’ cards.

Round three was primarily spent on the feet. The 262-pound Nelson (13-4) was gassed in that stanza and let Monson (28-8) steal the round with jabs. Neither fighter should be very proud of this effort.

Cage Writer gave the fight to the former IFL heavyweight champ Nelson 29-28. All three judges disagreed. MMA has exploded across the world, but the sport is still scrambling to find qualified judges. There were 6,500 fans in attendance to see Roy Jones Jr. fight Omar Sheika in the main event. The fans booed heavily when the Monson-Nelson went to the ground. The judges could’ve been affected by the crowd’s reaction.
