Machida interview: On his magic elixir and secret weapon in training
Lyoto Machida is a unique across the board. He's the only really successful mixed martial artist coming from a karate background who still uses much of his karate base. His style is incredibly elusive. It almost seems like other fighters are a little afraid of the guy. There's a mystique about him.
Of course it may also be because he was one of the only fighters who employs the strange practice of drinking his own urine:
"Every morning he wakes up and drinks his first urine of the day," said Ed Soares with a smiling Machida to the side. "It's urine therapy, it's a therapy that's a Japanese thing."
Watch Machida with Cage Writer on the odd topic of urine therapy:
They described it as having a filter effect saying your urine has a lot of protein, vitamins and nutrients, and that it's good to put all of that back into your system. On the taste, Machida said it depends on what you took in the day before. Lots of protein and it tastes sour. Lots of carbs and it has a sweet taste.
It was also interesting to hear Machida speak about training with Satoshi Ishii (4:44 mark), the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in Judo. Ishii, a highly sought after free agent, is making the transition to mixed martial arts. During a training video, Ishii could be seen looking dominant while working on the ground with Machida. Machida smiled when we asked him about this, suggesting that Ishii has a ways to go.
