Impeccable ground work gets J-Lau UFN 17 win

Joe Lauzon continues to impress with his technique and versatility on the ground. Jeremy Stephens was no pushover but he wore down as Lauzon constantly worked for the mount over the course of nine minutes. Lauzon (pictured w/MMA fan Joanne) scored a final mount with 30 seconds left in the second and quickly transitioned for an armbar attempt. Referee Troy Waugh had to stop it at 4:43 of the second when he thought Stephen’s left shoulder popped.

Lauzon, who talked a lot of trash with Stephens’ mentor Hermes Franca in the weeks leading up to the fight, paid the student much respect afterwards.

"He’s good, he hits hard. Even when I had my hands up, I was feeling the power."

Lauzon (18-4, 5-1 UFC) really began take control in the second with some dominant ground work. He didn’t look to pound Stephens with punches or elbows but made him work simply trying to avoid giving up a more dominant position.

"I knew we were getting closer to the end of the round. I was trying, trying, trying to get the mount. I’m glad I got him, he didn’t tap against Din Thomas but I’m happy to get the stoppage."

Lauzon, 24, said he wants to take the next step in his next fight. He got a shot last year against top 5 lightweight Kenny Florian but got overwhelmed in the second that night after a quick start.
