Cantwell interview: A ’sweet’ finish may bring a subdued celebration
It was supposed to be the night he "arrived" instead Steve Cantwell felt like the "Boom Goes the Dynamite" kid when his actions had the MMA nation shaking it's collective heads. Back at The Fight for the Troops in December on SpikeTV, Cantwell crushed Razak Al-Hassan via armbar but then became a punchline because of his behavior during his postfight. Cantwell ran around the cage making a snapping motion and told Joe Rogan that he always wanted to break someone's arm and that it was "sweet."
Cantwell told Cage Writer it took him just a few seconds, after watching the replay in the locker room, to realize that he looked like a jackass (0:45 mark):
He's got a tough challenge in Luiz Cane (9-1, 2-1 UFC). Cane is right on the cusp of breaking into the UFC's top 10 at light heavyweight. This may be too soon for the 22-year-old Cantwell who is making the move over from WEC where he was the 205 champ. He does have heavy hands and his kicks are excellent. Cantwell needs to make sure he doesn't gas himself. Cane showed against Sokoudjou he can throw with the best and won't lose any steam.
Cantwell () has been part of the Vegas fighting community since he was 16. His back story is great. Cantwell grew up on the outskirts of Las Vegas in Pahrump. His father was fed up with Cantwell fighting all the time as a kid and let kickboxer Nick Blumgren move him into his Las Vegas gym. Cantwell lived at the gym in a 10x10 room and now says it was the greatest time of his life.
